Wheel balance is one of those maintenance items that's easy to overlook until symptoms become impossible to ignore. Unbalanced wheels create vibrations, accelerate tire wear, and can even damage suspension and steering components over time.
What Is Wheel Balancing?
Every tire and wheel assembly has small weight variations due to manufacturing. Wheel balancing adds small weights to the rim to ensure the assembly spins evenly at high speed. Without proper balance, the wheel oscillates as it rotates, creating vibrations.
Symptoms of Unbalanced Wheels
Vibration at Highway Speeds
The most common symptom is vibration felt through the steering wheel, seat, or floorboard at speeds typically between 50–70 mph. The vibration may come and go or worsen at specific speeds.
Uneven Tire Wear
Unbalanced tires develop "cupping" or "scalloping" — a pattern of alternating high and low spots around the tread. This is different from the edge wear caused by alignment issues.
Noise at Speed
A rhythmic humming, buzzing, or thumping sound that changes with speed (not engine RPM) can indicate balance issues. The noise is caused by the tire bouncing slightly as it rotates.
Steering Wheel Wobble
If the front wheels are unbalanced, you'll typically feel the vibration in the steering wheel. If the rear wheels are unbalanced, the vibration is usually felt more in the seat and floorboard.
What Causes Wheels to Become Unbalanced?
- Lost wheel weights: The small weights clip or stick to the rim and can fall off from impacts or corrosion.
- Tire wear: As tires wear unevenly, the balance changes.
- Pothole impacts: Hard hits can damage the tire or knock off weights.
- New tire installation: Tires should always be balanced when mounted.
Can Unbalanced Wheels Cause Pulling?
While misalignment is the primary cause of pulling, severely unbalanced wheels can contribute to an unsteady feel. If your vehicle pulls to one side, both alignment and balance should be checked.
The Fix
Wheel balancing is quick, affordable, and should be done every 5,000–7,500 miles (with tire rotation) or whenever vibration symptoms appear. At Chloe's, we use precision computerized balancers for accurate results.
