Whether you're a first-time car owner or simply want to understand your vehicle better, knowing the basics of auto maintenance helps you make smarter decisions and avoid expensive repairs.

Read Your Owner's Manual

Your owner's manual is your vehicle's personal guidebook. It contains crucial information on maintenance schedules, recommended oil types, tire pressures, and other specific requirements for your car. Start here.

Regular Oil Changes

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine — it lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, minimizes wear, and assists with cooling. Follow the intervals recommended in your owner's manual (typically every 5,000 to 7,500 miles for conventional, up to 10,000 for full synthetic).

Tire Maintenance

Tires are your only contact with the road, making their condition vital for safety and fuel efficiency:

  • Check air pressure monthly (including the spare)
  • Monitor tread depth regularly
  • Rotate tires every 5,000–7,500 miles
  • Have alignment checked annually

Brake Inspections

Brakes are your car's most important safety feature. Have them inspected regularly and watch for warning signs: squealing or grinding noises, a soft brake pedal, vibrations when stopping, or pulling to one side.

Fluid Monitoring

Your vehicle relies on several fluids beyond engine oil:

  • Brake fluid
  • Transmission fluid
  • Power steering fluid
  • Coolant/antifreeze
  • Windshield washer fluid

Air Filters

Replace engine and cabin air filters every 12,000–15,000 miles to ensure clean air and smooth engine performance.

Dashboard Warning Lights

Never ignore dashboard warning lights — they're your vehicle's way of alerting you to issues that need attention. The sooner you address them, the less expensive the fix.
