Your vehicle's heating and air conditioning system does more than keep you comfortable — it's a safety feature. In Georgia's sweltering summers and Texas's unpredictable weather, a functioning climate control system is essential for safe driving.

How Your Vehicle's Climate System Works

Your AC system uses a refrigerant that cycles through a compressor, condenser, and evaporator to remove heat and humidity from the cabin air. The heating system uses hot engine coolant routed through a heater core to warm the interior.

Common AC Problems

  • Weak or warm airflow: Usually caused by low refrigerant due to a leak, a failing compressor, or a clogged expansion valve.
  • Unusual odors: Musty smells often indicate mold or mildew growth in the evaporator, while chemical smells can signal a refrigerant leak.
  • Strange noises when AC is on: Clicking, grinding, or squealing may point to a failing compressor clutch or worn serpentine belt.
  • AC blows cold then warm: This intermittent behavior often indicates a clogged expansion valve, electrical issue, or refrigerant that's slightly low.

Common Heating Problems

  • No heat from vents: Often caused by a stuck thermostat, low coolant, or a clogged heater core.
  • Foggy windows that won't clear: Your AC system dehumidifies air for defrosting — if the AC isn't working, defogging becomes difficult.
  • Sweet smell from vents: This indicates a leaking heater core, which can also cause coolant loss and overheating.

When to Service Your Climate System

We recommend an annual AC system inspection, ideally in early spring before the summer heat arrives. Signs you need immediate service include weak airflow, unusual noises, or any strange smells when the system runs.
