HOW TO CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURE

Chloe's Automotive Repair • May 08, 2023

How to Check Your Tire Pressure

It is essential to check tire pressure regularly because it affects the safety, handling, and fuel efficiency of your vehicle. Proper tire pressure ensures safety while on the road, prolongs tire life, improves fuel efficiency, and provides a smoother ride.

In this article, we'll walk you through how to check your tire pressure step by step, so you can keep your tires properly inflated and your vehicle running smoothly.

What Should My Tire Pressure Be?

The recommended tire pressure for your vehicle can usually be found in the owner's manual, on the driver's side door jamb, or on a sticker located in the glove compartment or trunk. The recommended pressure is specific to your vehicle make and model and is based on factors such as the weight of the vehicle and the type of tires used.

It is important to note that the recommended tire pressure is not the same as the maximum tire pressure listed on the tire sidewall. The maximum pressure listed on the tire is the maximum pressure that the tire can safely handle and should never be used as the recommended pressure.

To Check Your Tire Pressure, Follow These Steps:

  • Step 1: Locate a tire pressure gauge

A tire pressure gauge can be found at most auto parts stores, auto repair shops, gas stations, or can be purchased online.

  • Step 2: Check the recommended pressure

Refer to your vehicle owner's manual, the driver's side door jamb, or a sticker located in the glove compartment or trunk to find the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle.

  • Step 3: Check tire pressure when the tires are cold

It is important to check your tire pressure when the tires are cold for accurate readings.

  • Step 4: Remove the valve cap

Unscrew the valve cap from the tire valve stem.

  • Step 5: Press the gauge onto the valve stem

Press the gauge onto the valve stem until you hear a hissing sound. This indicates that air is flowing out of the tire and into the gauge.

  • Step 6: Read the pressure

The tire pressure gauge should show the current tire pressure. Compare this reading to the recommended pressure for your vehicle. If the pressure is too low or too high, adjust as needed.

  • Step 7: Replace the valve cap

Once you have finished checking the pressure, replace the valve cap on the valve stem to prevent dirt and debris from getting into the valve.

  • Step 8: Repeat this process for each tire on your vehicle.

How Often Should You Check Your Tire Pressure?

It is recommended to check your tire pressure at least once a month or before long trips to ensure that your tires are properly inflated. Tire pressure can fluctuate with changes in temperature. That’s why it’s advisable to check your tire pressure when the tires are cold to get accurate readings.

You should also check your tire pressure if you notice any signs of tire damage or wear or if your vehicle has been exposed to extreme temperature changes or rough road conditions.
