COMMON CAUSES OF CONSTANT ENGINE SPUTTERING

Chloe's Automotive Repair • Aug 09, 2022

A sputtering engine when you step on the gas can not only be annoying, but it can also point to something more serious like vacuum leaks, faulty fuel system, faulty spark plugs, and more. It may seem like a minor problem, but it points to a deeper problem that will only lead to more expensive repairs if neglected long enough.

The auto repair team at Chloe’s Auto Repair are experts at diagnosing and fixing all types of engine problems and have what it takes to get your vehicle running properly again.

Today, we will walk you through the common causes of constant engine sputtering and the solutions to those problems.

Faulty spark plugs

Spark plugs ignite the air/fuel mixture to create the explosion that makes your engine produce power. However, spark plugs wear out over time or develop a wide range of issues that interfere with their functioning. If your spark plugs are not working properly, you won’t get proper combustion in the engine, and this will make your engine sputter as it loses power. As a rule of thumb, spark plugs should be replaced every 20, 000 to 40, 000 miles, based on the type of car you drive and how often you drive the car.

Bad fuel filter

The fuel filter is responsible for removing foreign particles that could damage critical parts of the engine. Over time, it can become clogged with dirt resulting in lower fuel pressure, and this can cause the engine to sputter. The fuel filter should be inspected from time to time and replaced after a schedule.

Faulty catalytic converters

The catalytic converter is responsible for removing harmful gases from the exhaust. Over time, it can become clogged or its parts can become loose due to old age and block the exhaust way, causing your engine to sputter. Usually, faulty catalytic converters may lead to dark exhaust smoke, excessive heat under the vehicle, and reduced acceleration. If you notice these signs, reach out to a reputable auto repair shop for engine repair.

Throttle problems

The throttle body controls the amount of air the engine takes in and when it fails, it can cause engine sputtering. Grime buildup, electrical problems, and airflow disruptions can cause throttle problems that will lead to problems when accelerating.

It’s recommended that you clean the throttle body regularly and replace it when it reaches the end of its lifespan.

Vacuum leak

A vehicle’s engine is equipped with vacuums whose role is to actuate components and provide sensor readings. However, a leak in the vacuum system can negatively impact engine performance, causing the engine to back fire. A vacuum leak can be caused by a cracked or disconnected vacuum hose or a leaking gasket. The solution to a vacuum leak depends on what causes the leak, so it’s best to have an auto repair expert inspect your engine and fix the problem.

Other common causes of a sputtering engine include faulty oxygen sensors, faulty coolant temperature sensor, fuel pump issues, and dirty fuel injectors.
